Field Evaluation of Type 1, Class E, Unit Loads to Determine Causes of Corrosion on Cans of Nonperishable Subsistence

Abstract

Can corrosion problems were being reported by the Defense Supply Agency on standard sheathed, shrouded, and palletized loads of nonperishable subsistence which could not be alleviated by field expedients applied to the loads. To obtain data on a controlled basis, a test program was initiated to expose to condensation 90 unit loads, consisting of ten groups of nine loads each. Tests included variable in exposure time sheathing, internal polyethylene shroud, taping, ventilation, and configuration of the assembled load.
