Synthesis of New Low-Temperature Petroleum-Resistant Elastomers.

Abstract

Four petroleum-resistant elastomers have been developed which appear suitable for low temperature use. These materials are: (NP(OCH2CF3)2-NP(OCH2C3F7)2)n (1:1 and 2:1), (NP(OCH2CF3)2-NP(OCH2C3F6CF2H)2)n, anD (NP(OCH2CF2CF2H)2-NP(OCH2C5F10CF2H)2)n. These elastomers have initial decomposition points in the range of 300C in air. The 1:1 copolymer of (NP(OCH2CF3)2-NP(OCH2C3F7)2)n has a Tg of -77C, is very inert chemically, and is soluble only in selected fluorocarbon solvents. The material does not burn in air even in a direct flame. The copolymers (NP(OCH2CF3)2-NP(OCH2C3F6CF2H)2)n and (NP(OCH2CF2CF2H)2-NP(OCH2C5F10CF2H)2)n, are highly elastic and are unaffected by hydrocarbons and benzene, but are soluble in many polar organic solvents. Other poly(phosphazenes) were prepared which had interesting and useful properties. (Author)
