A Numerical Study of the Seasonal and Solar Cycle Changes of the Mid-Latitude Neutral Air Winds.

Abstract

The coupled equations representing the horizontal neutral air winds arising from the diurnal variation of atmospheric pressure, are solved numerically. Taking full account of the diurnal and seasonal variation of electron density, meridional and zonal winds have been computed at mid-latitudes for both solar maximum and solar minimum conditions. The daily variation of both the meridional and zonal wind can be well represented by a daily mean plus a 24- and 12-hour oscillation and tabular values of the winds for each season are given for the height of the F2 maximum and for every 100 km interval from 200 to 500 km. These values can be used to readily compute the associated vertical drift velocity at any middle latitude location when account is taken of the local geomagnetic field. (Author)
