New Chromium-Base Material with Magnesium Oxide Additives,

Abstract

The properties of dispersion-strengthened chromium-base alloy containing 3-9 percent MgO have been investigated. Additions of up to 5 per cent MgO increased the alloy compactibility because MgO acts as a lubricant. Increasing the MgO content above 5 percent resulted in a lower density of the alloy due to the increasing magnitude of elastic aftereffects. MgO improved the sinterability of the alloy by forming binary compounds (spinels) with the Cr sub 2 O sub 3 existing on the surface of Cr powder particles which retards the sintering process. The strength and plasticity of the alloy increased with increasing MgO content. The presence of MgO also retarded the grain growth in the deformed alloy at temperatures up to 1400-1500 degrees C.
