High-Energy Pulsed Liquid Laser.
Abstract
The report describes the design and fabrication of a Q-switched oscillator and a long-pulse oscillator/amplifier based on the solution Nd+3:ZrCl4POCl3 as the active medium. Improvements in these two laser units include liquid filter elements in the circulatory system and new pump seal designs. An additional new feature is incorporation of a two-temperature cooling system capable of dissipating the excess input power so that sustained operation can result and, at the same time, control the radial gradients in the active medium so that an axial gradient device can be obtained. Extensive experiments at an output level of 40 to 60 watts are described. In these experiments a liquid laser was operated with the same solution for a period of months. The liquid pump received thorough testing, and the mercury seal concept was found acceptable. In addition, the efficacy of filtering the laser liquid was clearly demonstrated. Finally, some initial experiments were done in the area of hole drilling and welding. (Author)
