Use of the Baboon in Meningococcal Meningitis Research.

Abstract

In an attempt to produce an experimental model for the study of meningococcal disease an effort was made to create a reproducible infection in the baboon (Papio cynocephalus). Although an antibody response was obtained in 47 of 57 young baboons inoculated with cultures of Neisseria meningitidis, very few of the animals exhibited any clinical symptoms. Of 2 animals which had positive blood cultures, 1 died in 48 hours and the other, although apparently moribund, began to recover at 5 days and 1 week later appeared normal. Mouse passage of all N. meningitidis strains employed increased the virulence of the strains for mice. However, these same strains did not become more virulent for baboons, but on the contrary mouse passage seemed to result in loss of virulence for baboons. (Author)
