Application of Electrical Current in Dental Anesthesia and Fluoride Iontophoresis and Its Effect upon Bone Formation.
Abstract
Investigations have been designed and initiated concerned with several specific objectives. Major emphasis is being devoted to studies of the feasibility of using electrical currents as an agent to control dental and orofacial pain. The initial phases of this effort have been devoted to characterizations of organism reactions to such pain and the development of electro-anesthesia equipment. In addition, we are conducting an experimental series to survey the currents, polarities, and field geometries of significance in the constructive modulation of tissue reparative processes. The preliminary work to date has demonstrated that artificial fields can modulate the cellular architecture of healing tissues of bone defects. Furthermore, a complex experimental and analytical system for studying the iontophoretic deposition of oral therapeutic agents has been assembled and is in operation. (Author)
