Light Products of the Destruction of the Benzene Molecule by Tritium Recoil Atoms,
Abstract
During investigation of the reaction of tritium recoil atoms with liquid benzene it was noticed that in the presence of iodine the activity of the gaseous products - fractions which, it was assumed, consisted exclusively of HT - was somewhat increased. Garland and Rowland showed during a study of the reactions of tritium recoil atoms with benzene in the gaseous phase that the ratio of activities of the gas fraction and the parent substance grows in the presence of oxygen and of nitric oxide. To clarify the reason for this extremely unexpected phenomenon, determination was made of given tagged hydrocarbons and the highly volatile fraction of the products from transformation of liquid benzene irradiated in the presence of lithium carbonate powder by thermal neutrons.
