Corona Processes in Clouds.

Abstract

Work has continued on the basic discharge mechanisms of electrically stressed water surfaces. The purpose of the study is to elucidate the processes leading to the initiation of lightning strokes and the production of radio noise with or without lightning strokes by highly electrified clouds. In this latter phase of the investigation, measurements have been made of the sparking potential of gaps in low pressure air between two electrodes, the cathode of which was a plane water surface. All the work was conducted in the Townsend discharge regime. (Author)
