New Interpretations of Normal Shock Wave Structure in Radiating Gases,

Abstract

Superposition of a velocity component normal to the oncoming flow allows analyses of radiatively structured normal shock waves to be interpreted in terms of radiating flows about a class of two-dimensional bodies. Analytical descriptions of such bodies are obtained for radiative transfer in a narrow spectral band and for gray body emission. Application of the solutions obtained to general two-dimensional radiative gasdynamics is discussed. The bodies considered are pointed but not necessarily slender, and vehicles of this type are of interest for very high speed ballistic reentry. (Author)
