Progress Notes in Military Blood Banking. A Systematic Approach to Early Recognition and Treatment of Incompatible Blood Transfusion Injury.

Abstract

A specific combination of procedures, including pasma hemoglobin determination and a direct Coombs' test, which bypass the original crossmatch tests and focus on the important question of whether a hemolytic transfusion reaction is occurring, is described. In addition to the cross-check principle, specific instructions have been prepared for all members of the hospital professional team. Each event concerning a transfusion reaction is recorded on a newly designed Blood Transfusion Reaction report which serves as review material for the Hospital Transfusion Board and finally as documentary evidence in the event of litigation resulting from purported blood transfusion injury.
