Mobile/Portable Ports 1990.

Abstract

The technology which could lead to the future realization of a truly mobile or portable port is explored and evaluated. A mobile or portable port is defined; a brief technological history of portable ports provided; the Army's need for such a port discussed: and overall configuration design considerations listed. Proposed types of facilities and equipment for transferring cargo, including containers, ashore are individually discussed in terms of their future potential for mobile/portable port use. Known schemes for mobile or portable breakwaters are characterized, described, and evaluated. The creation of artificial inshore harbors is presented for possible utilization in a mobile or portable port. Equipment concepts having the most potential for utilization in a future mobile/portable port are identified and future port equipment development recommendations are made. (Author)
