Determination of Chloroquine Resistant Plasmodium Falciparum Parasites in Palawan and Other Provinces of the Philippines.

Abstract

The purpose of this investigation is to determine the occurrence and prevalence of chloroquine resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum parasites in Palawan, Phillippines, and to observe the response of the resistant forms to other anti-malaria drugs. Malaria surveys were conducted in four localities of the municipality of Puerto Princesa, Palawan. A malaria prevalence rate of 11.88%, 26.96%, 3.68% and 13.93%, respectively, were observed. A total of 87 individuals with falciparum malaria were tested for chloroquine resistance, with all necessary controls applied. Of 40 tested with 10 mg./kg. body weight chloroquine base, 5 exhibited the R-I grade and 1 the R-II grade of resistance, and of 47 tested with 25 mg./kg. chloroquine over 3 days, 21 showed the R-I grade and 1 the R-II grade.
