Dielectric Matter and the Vector D.

Abstract

This is the first of two papers in which an attempt is made to clarify the standard theories of dielectrics and of permeable materials, and in particular, to clarify the meanings of D and H, two vectors that are frequently defined unsatisfactorily in the literature. It is intended to introduce certain well-defined postulates, and then to show that these postulates are equivalent to the implicit and sometimes camouflaged assumptions that underlie the usual treatments. This first article treats dielectrics and D; a later one will treat permeable matter and H. (Author)
