Research on Charged Alkali Colloids.

Abstract

The report presents an analysis of the insulating properties of metallic colloids. Low work function materials such as mercury are shown to be desirable. The method of determination of the breakdown strength for a mixture consisting of heavy metallic atoms, liquid droplets and a light neutral gas is presented. A study is included of the kinetics of nucleation for non ideal metallic alloys such as alkali amalgam together with a preliminary study of the condensation problem in a free jet. Finally the problem of charge generation by contact ionization is studied. The metallic vapor continuous loop was modified so as to allow the study of the properties of alkali amalgam vapors.
