Bounds to Frequencies of Uniform Beams with Elastically Attached Masses.

Abstract

The report presents upper and lower bounds to frequencies of the following uniform structures: torsion of a simply supported shaft with an elastically attached mass, bending of a simply supported beam with an elastically attached mass, bending of a fixed-free beam with elastically attached masses, and bending of a free beam with elastically attached masses. The Rayleigh-Ritz procedure was used to obtain upper bounds. Lower bounds were obtained using the method of Intermediate Problems with Special Choice. Although these problems can be solved exactly, the amount and complexity of the required computations often make this approach impractical. However, to show the effectiveness of the upper and lower bound methods, the exact frequencies are found for two of the problems. (Author)
