Intelligibility Testing of the Continuous Variable Slope Delta (CVSD) Coder-Decoder (CODEC).

Abstract

The report contains the results of a series of intelligibility tests performed on a Continous Variable Slope Delta (CVSD) coder-decoder (codec) subjected to various operating conditions. The test used was the Consonant Recognition Test recently developed by the Speech Techniques Team, Information Acquisition Technical Area, Communications/ADP Laboratory. The CVSD codec was operated at 19.2 kb/s and 38.4 kb/s and its performance was evaluated for digital error rates of 0%, 1%, and 10%, and with the codec connected in tandem with other CVSD codecs, a channel vocoder and a Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) system.
