Impact Transition Temperatures in 175mm M113E1 Gun Tube Material.

Abstract

The toughness of 175mm gun tubes made with improved practice by three vendors was evaluated, based on FATT (Fracture Appearance Transition Temperature). While all the tubes showed FATT considerably lower than previously experienced, the values for two were consistently better than the third. Major differences in practice, including ingot size (and, therefore, forging reduction), chemistry and melting practice, could not account for the differences. The fracture surfaces were evaluated. As the fibrosity decreased, the amount of dimpling decreased, and the amount of quasi-cleavage increased. However, even with 15% fibrosity, areas with large shear dimples were seen. (Author)
