A Numerical Method for the Solution of Optimal Control Problems with Bounded State Variables.

Abstract

The numerical solution of nonlinear optimal control problems subjected to nonlinear state variable inequality constraints and nonlinear terminal constraits is derived. The algorithm is a two step process. The first step is to seek a minimization of the cost functional based on the solution of a linearization of the problem. The second step is to restore the solution such that all nonlinear conditions are again satisfied. Compliance of the state variable inequality constraint is insured by directly determining appropriate components of the control vector. The inclusion of a parameter simplifies the numerical computation of variable time boundary conditions. The technique has application to analytical analysis of high performance vehicles that are subject to structural, environmental and human limitations which restrict the usable performance envelope.
