A Solution for Degradation in Shielding Effectiveness of Large Conducting Sheets Due to Weld Defects as Based on Babinet's Principle.

Abstract

For shielded enclosures much larger than a wavelength, the infinite sheet analysis is applicable. Defects in these enclosures, such as weld objects, are viewed as rectangular apertures. The equivalence principle allows replacement of the slot with an equivalent dipole to study propagation through the defect. Because of the approximations employed, the results are conservative. Propagation through an infinite sheet of good conductivity is presented. Formulas for fields transmitted through slots are developed. A comparison is made between these results and Kaden's solution for the circular aperture. Examples are included with the results presented parametrically. (Author)
