Preparation of Polyesters and a Polyanhydride Containing Phenylene-Perfluoroalkylene Units.

Abstract

Meta- and para-oriented aromatic dicarboxylic acids of the type HOOCC6H4(CF2)nC6H4COOH, where n = 3 and 5, and a diphenol, m,m'-HOC6H4(CF2)3C6H4OH, have been prepared and used to make a range of polyesters and a polyanhydride. Polyesters from the acids and 2,2,3,3,4,4-hexafluoropentane-1,5-diol showed that introduction of meta-oriented perfluoroalkylene groups led to lowered T(g)s, but not enough to afford new useful elastomers. Similar lowering of T(g) was observed in polyesters from bisphenol-A and by modification of a wholly aromatic polyester and polycarbonate. (Author)
