The Calculation of the Divergence Factor Characteristic of Earth Reflected Signals on Air-to-Air Radio Links.

Abstract

An exact cubic equation is derived for locating the reflection point that occurs due to multi-path propagation between two aircraft, so that the divergence factor for the reflected radiation can be calculated. It is shown that when the ratio of the heights of the two aircraft is large, approximations can be made leading to a quadratic equation. Two examples of divergence factor calculations are given using nonmographic techniques for determining and checking the reflection point position. Possible extensions of these techniques to other air craft height ratio cases are indicated. (Author)
