Organoboranes as Carbonium Ion Analogs.

Abstract

Electronic transitions have been examined in several classes of organoboranes which serve as models for carbonium ions. These are as follows: borane (carbonium ion), R3B (R3C+), Ar(n)B(OR) (3-n) (ArnC+(OR) (3-n)) and (ArCH2)-3B (ArCH2+CR2(+)) where R is alkyl or hydrogen and Ar is substituted phenyl. The results indicate that organoboranes may serve as useful models for electronic transitions in carbonium ions and in some instances (particularly tribenzylborane-phenonium ion models) good correlation with carbonium ion ground state properties is found.
