New Techniques for the Synthesis of Metals and Alloys, and the Properties of Rare Earth Metals and Alloys

Abstract

Two major areas of effort are encompassed: New techniques for the synthesis of metals and alloys. The report describes the HRPVD (The high rate physical vapor deposition) apparatus. Models for calculation of temperature and thickness distribution of the deposit are given. The properties of rare earth metals and alloys. The research was directed at obtaining an understanding of the mechanisms and to characterize the oxidation behavior of Ni-20Cr containing, Gd, La and Y and alloys based on the composition Ni3Al.
