Building Frost Resistant Roads (Ustroistvo Morozoustoichivykh Dorozhnykh Konstruktsii),

Abstract

The practice of operating highways in the foothill regions of southeastern Kazakhstan demonstrates that here one has all the conditions for the origination and development of the most dangerous (from the standpoint of road design strength) frost deformations. This is explained by the local natural climatic features which are formed under the influence of the high mountainous ranges of Northern Tyan'-Shan'. The foothills are characterized by natural climatic conditions differing from the flat plains and are included in the region of high (vertical) zonation or belong to a separate series of near-mountain or foothill zoning. Therefore the foothill regions of southeastern Kazakhstan, situated in northern sector V of the road-climatic zone, must be considered in relation to the plains regions, as extra-zonal areas, as is assumed in the existing pattern of the road-climatic regioning of the USSR.
