Arkansas River Navigation Entrance. Hydraulic Model Investigation.

Abstract

The study is concerned with the lower portion of the Arkansas River project which enters the Mississippi River through Arkansas Post Canal and White River. Tests were conducted on a fixed-bed model with a horizontal scale of 1:600 and a vertical scale of 1:100 reproducing the Mississippi River from mile 571 AHP to mile 604 AHP, Arkansas River from its mouth to a point about 56.5 miles upstream, White River from its mouth to a point 12 miles upstream, and adjacent overbank and backwater areas. Investigation was conducted to determine effects of various cutoffs on navigation, determine most favorable location for entrance into the navigation canal from Arkansas River, study the flow pattern and velocities in the entrance to the canal, and determine adequacy of proposed flood-control plan.
