Optimization in Weapon System Development and Computer Aided Design.

Abstract

Basic methods and ideas for an incorporation of organized optimization techniques in weapon system design are discussed in this report. The role of system optimization in the basic design process is first identified and its interfaces with other elements of the design process are discussed. A numerical optimization technique which can be utilized in a broad class of optimal design problems arising in applications is then outlined. This technique is applied to a problem of optimal structural design to illustrate its use. An additional use of this technique in an interactive computing mode is presented and illustrations are given to highlight the basic ideas of the technique and show how it can be implemented using the newly developed technology of interactive computer graphics. Examples of utilization of this optimization technique in the interactive mode are presented for the general class of structural optimization problems and for a specific artillery optimal design problem.
