Brain, Behavior, and Intracerebral Blood Flow: Intracerebral Electrographic Studies in the Human Brain.
Abstract
With the safe hydrogen technique, regional Cerebral Blood Flow (rCBF) has been measured around 16-19 intra cerebral platinum electrodes in 14 patients. Computer program for rCBF calculations gives reasonable results. Observation of spontaneous and induced changes of short, 3-4 min. or long, 1-4 hours, duration have been accomplished without needles or catheters in the blood vessels. The patient is unrestrained lying on a couch. The accomplishment for the first time of observations of focal longitudinal fluctuation of blood flow over prolonged periods has added a new dimension to the study of the blood flow in the brain. The longitudinal signatures in the data represent a new contribution to knowledge of cerebral blood flow, important for the Army in improving methods for treating brain trauma and combat head injuries, as well as for neurosurgery in general.
