Mark I Deep Dive System - Experimental Stress Analysis.

Abstract

The investigation is concerned with the structural safety of the mating flange assembly and the turnbuckle tie-downs of the Mark I Deep Dive System. Various parts of the system were instrumented to measure the strains induced by the ship motion. Test results lead to the following conclusions: (a) the clamp screw, which controls the movement of the mating flange, needs to be redesigned, and (b) a procedure be established for the evaluation of the stresses due to the original tightening of the turnbuckle tie-downs.
