Marine Layer Over Sea Test Range.

Abstract

The first section of the report presents a quantitative theoretical treatment of the southern California stratus problem and a suggested formulation of a forecast program. It points out the need for a systematic synoptic climatology of the local effects. The second section presents the results of an observational program conducted during the summer of 1966 that used an instrumented plane to provide a description of the offshore marine layer between Point Conception and Santa Catalina Island. It presents the distribution of the mean depth of the marine layer over this area and its diurnal variation. It also shows many of the disturbances induced by coastal and insular terrain. The third section presents the results of the observational program conducted in summer 1967 which covered more intensively the area offshore of the Santa Monica Mountains. It displays the average slope of the marine layer top in the verical section normal to the mountains, the average stability in the marine layer and the lower part of the inversion layer as a function of distance from the mountains including diurnal trends in these features. It also shows the average size of the small-scale bumpiness in the top of the marine layer. (Author)
