Microwave and Optical Spectroscopy of Magnetic Ions in Crystals.

Abstract

The report describes the development of instrumentation for the investigation of the detailed nature of energy levels of impurity ions in crystalline solids used to investigate some of the detailed nature of the energy level scheme of exchange-coupled chromium ion pairs in ruby; to study some aspects of energy transfer between isolated chromium ions and pairs of chromium ions in ruby: and to observe the transfer of energy from one system to another by means of an energy-level crossing technique.
