Some Solutions of the Diffusion Equation for an Expanding Gas Cloud in a Constant Shear Flow.

Abstract

Analytical solutions of the differential equation that describes a diffusion process in the presence of a constant background velocity gradient have been obtained and are reported in this paper. They are useful for the proper interpretation of experimental data collected during the course of chemical releases in the upper atmosphere, to allow more accurate determination of diffusion coefficients. Chemical releases are a powerful tool for the study of atmospheric properties, and are carried out in support of USAF functional requirements in satellite operation, in missile detection, and in communications.
