Flow Laws of Some Important Rock-Forming Silicates.
Abstract
Constant strain-rate experiments were done on peridotite in the pressure range 5 to 30 kb, temperature interval 300C to 1400C and at strain rates of 0.001/sec. to 10 to the minus 8th power/sec. in order to determine the deformational processes and the governing flow law. The translation gliding mechanisms change with increasing temperature and decreasing strain rate from (110), (100), (001) through (0k1) (100) to (010)(100). At 1000 degrees and a strain rate of 0.001/sec., the diffusion-controlled dislocation climb process of polygonization becomes apparent. At slightly higher temperatures, recrystallization is evident, first at grain boundaries and then throughout the strained host grains. Steady-state flow in te experiments was achieved only when these diffusion-controlled processes became important or dominant. (Author)
