Operation of the Accelerator Storage Ring to Provide Ultraviolet Radiation.

Abstract

It was proposed to operate the electron storage ring as the source of ultraviolet radiation for the performance of experiments in solid state, atomic, and surface physics. In addition to operating the storage ring as a source of ultraviolet radiation for physical and chemical experimentation, it was proposed to set up a permanent experimental station at the north port of the storage ring. This was to be accomplished through the acquisition of a normal incidence monochromator, experimental chamber and a focusing system. The installation of a parallel beam line at the west port was planned as a means for accommodating more experiments at the ring. A study of the wave shifter was to be undertaken in order to determine the feasibility of enriching the synchrotron radiation spectrum in the shorter wavelength range through the use of orbit perturbing magnets. In addition, several improvements in the storage ring and the injector synchrotron were planned. These included the completion of a high power RF supply, and the replacement of several trimmer coil power supplies on the injector synchrotron and beam transport line.
