A Scale Model Evaluation of Transmitting Antenna for the Omega System.

Abstract

The study was an investigation of two VLF antenna configurations with variations of top-hat design. One antenna was 12 feet high with a top-hat having a radius of 20 feet. The other antenna was 16 feet high with a top-hat having a radius of 10 feet. The study was to determine the feasibility of building a low cost VLF antenna for Project Omega. Particular attention was given to size, tower height, antenna voltage for a given radiated power, and above all, low cost. All measurements were made at a frequency of one megacycle and included the following; capacitance, base impedance, effective height, radiation resistance, base antenna voltage, top hat voltage and radiated power at 2.3 miles. The basic antenna configuration consists of center tower either 12 feet high with eight towers equally spaced around the center tower at a radius of 20 feet, or 16 feet with towers at 10-foot radius. Measurements were recorded with all towers, guy wires and center tower floating and then grounded. Measurements were also made with end towers connected to the top-hat and insulated from ground. The center tower and guys in the latter case were grounded for a series of tests and also insulated from ground. The top-hat configuration was altered for various tower conditions. (Author)
