Development of a Telescope with a Six Meter Mirror (Razrabotka Teleskopa s Zerkalom Diametrom 6 Metrov).

Abstract

The article deals with the need for increased penetration and resolution of optical telescopes for research in modern astrophysics and the trend toward reflecting telescopes with prodded the construction of a special astrophysics observatory (SAO) with a 6-meter telescope mirror under the auspices of the U.S.S.R. Academy of Sciences. Parametric limits are surveyed from the standpoint of the 6-meter mirror as a maximum practicality. From there, logistics of planning, production, and operation are examined in detail, with a summary of general information about the special observatory included. (Author)
