Prediction of Environmental Parameters. Volume I. Numerical Simulation of Convection.

Abstract

A brief review is given of the numerical procedures that have been developed for the study of convection in the atmosphere. Certain aspects of these procedures such as uniqueness of the finite-difference formulations and numerical stability are discussed in appendices. Results are then given of the application of these procedures to the simulation of dry convection in a deep, two-dimensional region in which motion is initiated by differential heating at the base. A procedure is provided for the simulation of moist convection with a rain stage that could have application to a deep region. A study is presented of the feasibility of yet another method of handling the deep, moist convection problem. Results also are presented of the simulation of convection in a shallow region in the presence of an ambient wind. (Author)
