Hard Rocks of Deep-Sea Trenches of the Southwestern Part of the Pacific Ocean (Tverdye Porody Glubokovodnykh Zhelobov Yugo-Zapadnoi Chasti Tikhogo Okeana),
Abstract
The hard rocks of the ocean bottom, their petrology and age, attract the attention of geologists, but their study is limited. Twenty-three samples of hard rocks of the Pacific Ocean gathered during 25, 26, 27 VITYAZ' Cruises (1957-1958) have been studied at the Institute of Oceanology of the Academy of Sciences of the U.S.S.R. These samples have been taken from submarine outcrops or gathered with trawls and bottom samplers at the feet of New Britain, Bougainville, Mariana, Tonga and New Hebrides deep-sea trenches. Among them are 5 basalt pillow lava, 1 basalt, 2 dolerite, 1 basalt tuff conglomerate, 1 limy tuff breccia, 1 liparite tuff, 1 andesite-basalt tuff, 1 tufaceous siltstone, 4 limy (13.49-31.75% CaC03), and 5 argillite samples. The igneous rocks from the New Britain and Mariana trenches represent the toleitic basalt series. On many islands of the andesitic zone there are rocks of this series. (Author)
