Quarterly Operating Report for Radioisotopic Power Generators of the U. S. Navy. Volume 5 Number 1.

Abstract

The objective of the Report is to serve as a vehicle for the accumulation and dissemination of information concerning the application and operation of radioisotopic power generators (RPGs) within the Navy. It will be noted that all RPGs presently listed are radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs). Unless specifically identified as an engineering evaluation, items contained in this report are presented as an impartial collection of facts, observations, and other information. Two new 25 watt generators were added to the Navy inventory in January and an invitation for bids on four one watt RPGs was issued in mid-March. The LCG-25C1 powered acoustic system and the LCG-25A powered oceanographic data collection system continued to operate normally throughout the reporting period as did the deep ocean transponder network and portable automatic weather station powered by the 1 watt URIPS generators and the Sentinel-8 respectively. Periodic overflights kept the malfunctioning RTG-8/NOMAD Buoy N4E system under surveillance pending a mid-April repair/recovery trip. (Author)
