Fluoride Analyses in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean.

Abstract

Fluoride chlorinity ratios were determined in seawater samples collected at various depths along a transect from the Grand Banks to the eastern side of the Mid Atlantic Ridge. Fluoride chlorinity ratios in the range 6.9 to 7.3 x 10 to the-5th power g/kg(o/oo) were observed on the southeast flank of the Grand Banks whereas the values were typically 6.6 to 6.8 x 10 to the-5th power g/kg(o/oo) further east toward the Mid Atlantic Ridge. There was no evidence of high fluoride chlorinity ratios near the Ridge, nor was there any indication of high fluoride near the seafloor which might be associated with resuspended sediment. Measurements of fluoride were also performed on rain water, sediment pore water, and fumerole water. (Author)
