Research on the Photon Absorption Processes of Gases Important in the Upper Atmosphere.

Abstract

The results of investigations into the absorption processes of gases important in upper atmosphere chemistry and physics are presented. The principle region studied in the vacuum ultraviolet at wavelengths less than 3000 A. Methods of producing the OH radical in sufficient concentration to obtain its absorption cross-section are explored. New bands in the spectrum of methylamine and its deuterium derivatives have been found and their absorption cross-section measured. The effect of low temperature and the effect of a high pressure of argon on the absorption cross-sections of the 1780 A band of carbon suboxide have been determined. These results are used in conjunction with the Herzberg-Teller theory of vibrationally induced electronic transitions and an INDO molecular orbital calculation to assign the upper states of the 2650 A, 1780 A, and 1587 A bands of carbon suboxide.
