Infrared Examination of Protective Coatings

Abstract

The tests showed that the identity of paint vehicle resins can be established by infrared spectrophotometry. A sample in suitable solvent was placed on a potassium bromide disk. After solvent evaporation, the sample was examined in a spectrophotometer over a chosen frequency region. The identity of the sample was established by comparison of its spectrum with spectra of samples of known constitution previously prepared. The experimental error is plus or minus 3 percent.
