Theoretical Study of Electron Attachment Phenomena.

Abstract

The report presents the results of a theoretical investigation of the attachment of electrons to molecules with the formation of negative ions. Two major areas were studied: The mechanism of electron attachment, and Neutral atom stripping reactions. A phenomenological model of the attachment cross section was developed and employed to establish criteria for the use of attaching compounds to reduce boundary layer plasmas. In order to check the attachment model with experimental data, a convolution analysis of electron impact experiments was formulated. The analysis of beam energy resolution led to a study of energy dispersion in cross beam experiments and to the conceptual design of a negative iodine ion beam experiment. The potential degradation in the efficiency of electron attachment due to the reactivity of atomic oxygen was assessed through the formulation of a reaction cross section model for atom stripping.
