Noise in the Neutral Sheet in the Geomagnetic Tail.

Abstract

Following the conclusion of Contract AF61(052)-927 the continuing effort concentrated on the self-consistent model of the undisturbed sheet, broken into two cases where the normal component of magnetic field is negligible and important. The former case is near completion, the most striking feature being the concentration of the potential drop at the dawn end of the sheet. The latter case is more difficult, but has been broken into two parts on the basis of a hopeful approximation. The self-consistent problem is like an optimisation problem, and a simple iterative scheme looks hopeful for the first part and programming is in progress. The second part may be suitable for the computational physics approach, but other optimisation techniques will be investigated. (Author)
