Initial Distortion of an Acoustic Pulse on Reflection from a Rough Surface.

Abstract

It is demonstrated that the initial part of the acoustic signal received by way of reflection at the rough sea surface from an explosive source is distorted in a calculable way. As the effective roughness of the sea surface increases, the rise time of the initial part of the received pulse increases and its peak value decreases. Recommendations are made on how this latter effect of 'coherent peak loss' could be predicted from oceanographic data and compared with acoustic measurements. (Author)
