Biological Results of Sampling in the Deep Scattering Layers of the Western Mediterranean in Autumn.

Abstract

Investigations in the Mediterranean sea have revealed some consistent features of the deep scattering layers (DSL). A 12 kHz Edo Echo Sounder and a Precision Fathometer Recorder (PFR) were used for elucidating changes in the density of the scattering and the distribution of the layers in time and space. Samples of the scatterers have been collected by towing a midwater closing-net sampler horizontally at speeds between 2.5 and 3.5 knots. During these observations Siphonophores, Euphausiids, and fish (Myctophids and Sternoptychids) were found to be the most predominant species encountered. (Author)
