Spillway for Rend Lake Reservoir Big Muddy River, Illinois; Hydraulic Model Investigation.

Abstract

Tests of the Rend Lake Reservoir spillway were conducted with a 1:16-scale model that reproduced a 129-ft length of the 435-ft-long main spillway, including a notched section with crest el 405.0 and two adjacent portions of the spillway with crest el 410.0, to study the adequacy of the spillway, stilling basin, and exit channel protective stone. After completion of tests concerned with the notched portion of the spillway, the notch was filled in and the model revised to permit study of flow conditions at the right abutment. Approximately 250 ft of approach channel and 500 ft of exit channel were reproduced to ensure proper flow characteristics. Particular emphasis was placed upon the selection of a stilling basin downstream of the notched section that would perform satisfactorily with the anticipated tailwater depths, which are insufficient for ideal performance of a conventional hydraulic-jump type basin. Four alternate designs were investigated and a stilling basin was developed that permitted adequate dissipation of energy. This basin consisted of a recessed portion downstream of the notched spillway which was 40 ft wide, 32 ft long, and 2 ft below the apron of the main stilling basin. (Author)
