Computation of Smoothing and Interpolating Natural Splines Via Local Bases,

Abstract

It is shown how smoothing splines can be computed using local bases by solving a linear system with a small number of bands. Interpolating splines are a special case. Recursion relations are developed which permit rapid, efficient, and accurate computation of the basis elements, and of the coefficients. (Author)
