Estimation of Forces on a Flechette Resulting from a Shock Wave.

Abstract

The potential deflecting forces on a flechette arising from a shock wave are investigated. The predominate force acts on the fins and is caused by the cross flow induced by the oblique shock wave. Also important are the cross flow over the nose and the local pressure unbalance near the shock wave. The forces and moments are determined to be of sufficient magnitude to cause appreciable scatter, but exterior ballistic calculations are needed to quantify the scatter. Several refinements to the force calculations are suggested. (Author)
