The Effect of Charge Transport on the Disintegration of Liquid Jets.
Abstract
Comparison was made between calculated values of the size of drops formed from electrified jets and experimental results in which apparatus was employed which progressively approached the model used in the theory. An initial procedure for extending the laboratory tests for measuring drop sizes from electrified jets to higher velocity jets was found to be unsatisfactory because of the large drop size encountered with unelectrified and slightly electrified simple jets. This led to development of an alternative procedure which will remove this problem. The role of ambient gas density and permittivity in the general theory of electrified jet breakup was developed. A critical review of charged drop literature was conducted, with major emphasis on instabilities, multiple disintegrations, heat transfer, and evaporative behavior. A model of charged-drop behavior in electric fields and subject to hydrodynamic and aerodynamic influences was developed. The relationship of this model to design of experimental apparatus for the study of charged-drop behavior is delineated. (Author)
